  • Resumen: The present work aims to study the medical campus of the University City of Madrid. The main objectives are to observe, analyze and understand how the environment and historical background lead to an urban and architectural process of creating this complex. The study begins in the 19th century and extends until the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. It also includes an examination of the reconstruction process to understand the current state of the campus. The spatial framework ranges from a general overview of the city to a detailed analysis of each element. To analyze the medical complex, the study starts with an examination of the historical background of medical studies in Madrid. Then, it focuses on the pre-existing institutions in the University City's surroundings, which were primarily medical and healthcare-related. Understanding the surrounding context helps understand the development of Javier de Luque's initial proposal for a new Faculty of Medicine and hospital. This process eventually leads to the creation of the University City of Madrid, where the formation of the medical campus is analyzed from its early proposals to its construction. During this process, Miguel de los Santos and Agustín Aguirre develop the project for the three buildings, seeking unity through order and modulation. This results in three buildings of great compositional interest, with the Faculty of Medicine standing out for its complexity. However, the outbreak of the war prevents the ambitious university project from being completed. After the war, reconstruction decisions are made that shape the future of the campus. Analyzing these decisions helps distinguish between the intended vision. This research process demonstrates how the need for a new Faculty of Medicine is one of the driving factors behind the University City project and its gravitational center. This is due to the scale, architecture, and development of the buildings that make up the campus, as well as the urban space generated by the complex. Drawing has been used as a tool for studying, analyzing, and conveying results. The collection of documentation, analysis, and graphic reconstruction of the architecture aims to serve as a foundation for future studies and interventions that can preserve and recover the essence of the projected medical campus for the University City of Madrid. RESUMEN El presente trabajo tiene como objeto de estudio el campus médico de La Ciudad Universitaria de Madrid. Los principales objetivos son observar, analizar y comprender como el entorno y los antecedentes históricos desembocan en un proceso urbanístico y arquitectónico de creación de este complejo. Desde el punto de vista temporal este recorrido abarca desde el siglo XIX hasta el estallido de la guerra civil en 1936. A ello se añade una aproximación a la guerra y la posterior reconstrucción con el objetivo de comprender el estado actual de los mismos. El marco espacial va de lo general a lo particular partiendo de la escala de conjunto hasta el detalle de cada uno de los elementos. Para analizar el grupo médico se ha partido del estudio de los precedentes relativos a los estudios médicos en Madrid. Continua con el entorno de la Ciudad Universitaria previa a su construcción, focalizando la atención en el conglomerado de instituciones de carácter médico-asistencial que la precedían. El conocimiento del contexto circundante permite comprender el desarrollo de la primera propuesta de Javier de Luque para la construcción de una nueva Facultad de Medicina y hospital. Todo este proceso desemboca en la fundación de la Ciudad Universitaria de Madrid, dentro de la cual se analiza la conformación del campus médico desde las primeras propuestas hasta su construcción. En este desarrollo Miguel de los Santos y Agustín Aguirre completan el proyecto de las tres facultades buscando la unidad a través del orden y la modulación. Todo ello desemboca en tres edificios de gran interés compositivo, entre los que destaca la Facultad de Medicina por su complejidad. La llegada de la guerra impediría que se completase el ambicioso proyecto universitario. Tras la guerra se tomarán decisiones de reconstrucción que marcarán el futuro del campus y cuyo análisis permite discernir entre lo que este conjunto pretendía ser y lo que actualmente observamos. Este proceso de investigación muestra como la necesidad de una nueva Facultad de Medicina es uno de los elementos detonantes del proyecto de la Ciudad Universitaria y centro de gravedad de la misma. Esto se deberá a la escala, arquitectura y desarrollo de los edificios que conforman el campus, así como al espacio urbano generado por el conjunto. El dibujo ha sido empleado como herramienta de estudio, análisis y transmisión de resultados. La recopilación de documentación, el análisis y la reconstitución gráfica de la arquitectura tiene la vocación de servir como base para futuros estudios e intervenciones que puedan conservar y recuperar la esencia del campus médico proyectado para la Ciudad Universitaria de Madrid.
